People of Suai, in Timor-Leste commemorate the one year anniversary of the massacre, which is known as
"Setembro Negro" (Dark September). The massacre was committed by pro-Indonesian militia and the Indonesian military on September 6, 1999 and killed hundreds of pro-independence supporters prior to the announcement of the result of the referendum, in which a majority of Timorese voted in favor of independence.
